Little Egg Harbor Vocation
The focus of the project was geared toward thinking radically. What is radical architecture? Is it some extreme shape, system, or structure?
The idea of being radical is as open-ended as the designer allows it to be. Through the development of the high school, we challenged the daily transportation, flooding, and program of a bay-front building. Aggregating horizontal and vertical elements to create the form of the high school, we were able to accommodate the issues of flooding, transportation, and circulation along the 26-acre site. The school’s program includes a lighthouse, pole and spring diving, aquatic research, oyster and algae farming, a rowing simulator, a botanical garden, classrooms, an auditorium, a cafeteria, a library, student lounges, and a student gallery. The project’s overall goal questioned how radical can architecture be and to what extremes can we design.
